Scoliosis in Children and Adolescents: What Parents Should Know

Scoliosis assessment in a child at Shree Krishna Ortho and Spine Care, Mandya

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine develops an abnormal sideways curvature. It is commonly detected during childhood or adolescence, particularly during periods of rapid growth.

Many children with scoliosis have no pain, so the condition may first be noticed by parents, teachers or during a routine examination.

What are the signs of scoliosis?

Parents may notice:

  • One shoulder appearing higher than the other
  • One shoulder blade appearing more prominent
  • Uneven waistline
  • One hip appearing higher than the other
  • The child leaning slightly to one side
  • Prominence of the ribs on one side while bending forward
  • Clothes appearing uneven when worn

Does scoliosis cause back pain?

Many children and adolescents with scoliosis do not have significant pain. Therefore, absence of pain does not necessarily mean that a spinal curvature is unimportant.

The degree of curvature and remaining growth of the child are important when deciding whether observation or treatment is required.

How is scoliosis evaluated?

Evaluation usually includes examination of the child’s posture, shoulder and pelvic alignment, spinal balance and neurological function.

When necessary, standing spine X-rays may be advised to measure the curvature and assess its severity.

Does every child with scoliosis need treatment?

No.

Small curves may only require periodic observation, particularly while the child is growing.

Depending on the type and severity of the curve and the amount of growth remaining, treatment may include observation, bracing or, in selected severe or progressive cases, surgery.

When should parents seek specialist evaluation?

Consider evaluation when you notice:

  • Unequal shoulder height
  • Uneven hips or waist
  • Prominent ribs on one side
  • Visible curvature of the spine
  • Increasing asymmetry during growth
  • A previously diagnosed curve that appears to be progressing

Early assessment is particularly useful in a growing child because progression can be monitored and appropriate treatment considered when necessary.
