Back pain is common, but when should you see a specialist?
Back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems. In many people, mild back pain improves with rest, activity modification and appropriate treatment. However, persistent or severe pain may indicate an underlying spine condition that requires specialist evaluation.
When should you consult a spine specialist?
Consider consulting a spine specialist if you have:
- Back pain that persists or repeatedly returns
- Pain travelling from the lower back into the buttock, thigh, leg or foot
- Numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the leg
- Weakness in the leg or difficulty walking
- Back pain associated with prolonged standing or walking
- Severe pain following a fall or injury
- Back pain that significantly interferes with sleep or daily activities
- Persistent symptoms despite medication, physiotherapy or other initial treatment
Seek urgent medical attention
Certain symptoms require prompt medical assessment, particularly:
- Sudden or progressive weakness in the legs
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Numbness around the groin or inner thighs
- Severe back pain associated with fever
- Significant pain following a major injury
Does seeing a spine specialist mean surgery?
No.
Most patients with back pain do not require spine surgery. Treatment depends on the cause of the pain and may include activity modification, medications, physiotherapy, posture and exercise advice, or other non-surgical treatments.
Surgery is considered only when there is an appropriate medical indication after clinical evaluation and necessary investigations.
Getting the right diagnosis matters
Back pain can arise from several structures, including the muscles, discs, joints, nerves and other structures around the spine. A clinical examination helps determine the likely cause and whether investigations such as an X-ray or MRI are necessary.
