Knee arthritis is a common cause of persistent knee pain, stiffness and difficulty with everyday activities. Although it becomes more common with increasing age, the severity of symptoms can vary considerably between patients.
What is knee arthritis?
Knee osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage covering the surfaces of the knee joint gradually wears down. As arthritis progresses, the joint may become painful and stiff, making activities such as walking, climbing stairs and getting up from a chair more difficult.
What are the common symptoms?
Common symptoms of knee arthritis include:
- Pain while walking or climbing stairs
- Pain while getting up from a chair
- Morning stiffness
- Swelling around the knee
- Reduced knee movement
- Grinding or cracking sensation
- Difficulty walking longer distances
- Progressive bowing or deformity of the knee
Does knee arthritis always require surgery?
No. Many patients with knee arthritis can be treated without surgery.
Treatment depends on the severity of arthritis, symptoms and the patient’s activity level. Treatment options may include activity modification, weight management when appropriate, physiotherapy, strengthening exercises, medications and other non-surgical measures.
When should you consult an orthopaedic surgeon?
An orthopaedic evaluation may be helpful when:
- Knee pain persists despite initial treatment
- Walking or climbing stairs becomes increasingly difficult
- Pain interferes with sleep or daily activities
- Knee movement becomes significantly restricted
- There is progressive deformity of the knee
- Pain is substantially affecting your quality of life
When is knee replacement considered?
Knee replacement may be considered in patients with advanced arthritis when pain and functional limitation remain significant despite appropriate non-surgical treatment.
The decision for knee replacement should not be based on an X-ray alone. Symptoms, clinical examination, X-rays, activity requirements and the patient’s overall health should all be considered.
